<> Use pallets, 2 x 4's, plywood, or VisiQueen to keep your items off the cement floor of the unit because cement holds moisture
which can be absorbed into cardboard and furniture causing molding. Any concrete floor may become cold and damp.
<> Do
not store any food items as they will attract rodents and pests.
<> Control mice entering the locker by placing mice food
poison just inside the doors.
<> Utilize the space in your unit. Make a plan as to how you are going to arrange your items.
A good plan will save you the time of having to rearrange your unit. Leave an aisle in the center of your unit so there's a
walk way to the back of the unit.
<> Leave a small space between the wall and your storage items to allow for ventilation.
<>
Pack your boxes and other items as close together as possible to avoid moisture accumulating between them.
<> Store frequently
used items at the front of the unit to avoid having to search for them.
<> Keep out of season clothes accessible, you may have
your belongings in storage longer than anticipated. If storing wool items, use cedar chips or mothballs to prevent moth damage.
Clothing that ordinarily hangs in a closet should be packed in a wardrobe carton.
<> Never store anything in sealed plastic
bags. The humidity will cause damage to your goods.
<> Make sure all appliances are clean and dry before storing
them. Keep appliances slightly ajar to prevent mildew. Avoid moving in wet weather (rain/snow) because storing items wet
or damp will cause mildew.
<> Remove and discard vacuum cleaner bags.
<> Store mirrors and pictures on end, not flat.
They should be wrapped in cardboard and marked "FRAGILE".
<> Wax wood furniture before storing it. Use sheets or
cotton cloth to cover furniture.
<> Disassemble items such as tables, bed frames, etc -- this will save space.
Wrap and label all pieces for an easier time when you reassemble them. Put all hardware in bags and mark the bags accordingly.
<> When you disassemble electronics such as computers and stereos (items with numerous cables), place small colored stickers
on the cable and the same color sticker where the cable goes. This will make reassembly easier. If possible, use the original
packing for electronic items.
<> Label the boxes on all six sides and keep a list for easy reference. This will save time
when looking for a particular item. Pack boxes so that they are not too heavy to lift. Place heavier boxes on the bottom and
lighter ones on the top to prevent boxes from being crushed. Keep cardboard boxes off the floor. Plastic containers, such
as Rubbermaid, are recommended if placing directly on floor. They have tight fitting lids and stack easily.
<> Keep the
more valuable items in the rear of the unit. This will prevent others from seeing them when you are in the unit.
<>
Do not assume that your homeowner or renter insurance will cover your belongings while in storage. You may need to purchase insurance.
<> Drain all gasoline from lawnmowers, power tools, boats, snowmobiles, etc. before storing them.
<> Store mattresses
and box springs on long edges. Wrap for protection and elevate off the floor with wood pallets, 2x4's, plywood...anything that
will keep the items off the floor of the storage unit.
<> Do not use printed newspaper to pack with. The ink may smudge
off on your items. When wrapping collectibles or anything breakable, tape it after you wrap it.
